Monaco The Movie Set

Ever since French film-maker, Méliès, Monaco has been one of the favourite settings for cinema, so let’s
take a look at the greatest films shot in the Principality which have kept the myth alive. by Milena Radoman

Since the birth of cinema, no less than 300 films Another blockbuster chose Monaco as a setting: entire Principality, from the Monte-Carlo Bay to

men. Gad Elmaleh directed his first film, Coco, in
Monaco, in which a whimsical father organises
the Bar Mitzvah of his son. The Principality is even
          represented in computer-generated animated
          films such as 2012’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s
          Most Wanted.

Grand Prix: Star of the Silver Screen
Unsurprisingly, the Formula 1 Grand Prix has often
been in films. In John Frankenheimer’s Grand Prix
shot in 1966 and starring James Garner, Eva Marie
Saint and Yves Montand amongst others, the real
mingles with the imaginary. In the film are racing
drivers, Graham Hill, Jack Brabham, Jim Clark,
Juan Manuel Fangio and Denny Hulme (who
won the world championship in 1966). Thanks Tournage du film «Coco» de Gad Elmaleh, avec Gad Elmaleh, Manu Payet, Jean Benguigui, Ary Abittan. Sorti le 18 mars 2009.

(1972), Roman Polanski follows champion, Jackie
Stewart, close up for a weekend, from his hotel
to the starting line – and the icing on the cake is
a victory on the urban circuit of Monaco for this
triple world champion, like diving into the world

More recently, the blockbuster, Iron Man 2
(2010), starring Robert Downey Jr and Scarlett
Johansson, also left its mark. The F1 race scenes
were filmed in Monaco in order to give an image

the day after the Grand Prix.
Of course, though, the casino and the five-star
hotels – particularly the Hôtel de Paris - are the
other big stars of films set in Monaco, starting
with Sacha Guitry’s 1936 Confessions of a Cheat.
