“Reading the City from its Heritage to Architecture”
by Suzanne Belaieff PUBLI-COMMUNIQUÉ
“The starting point: human space in general has always been meaningful”.
In every city, from the moment it is truly inhabited by man, there is a fundamental rhythm of significance.
We are witnessing a growing awareness of “the functions of symbols in urban space”, but the conflict between meaning and function, or the
opposition between the sign and the absence of a sign, remains the conflict of urban planners.
The city speaks to its inhabitants “we speak the language of the city”, which in turn evolves into meaning and those who give meaning.
Forms of Crisis
The challenge is to create designs that are capable of structuring or deconstructing themselves over time, while maintaining an identity and
ensuring continuity.
This Art of Crisis brings Architecture back to the forefront of the way we perceive and conceive what is URBAN.
SO THAT ARCHITECTURE CAN MAINTAIN THE ENVIRONMENT AND ITS IMAGE:
The image we have of our city is rooted in memories and meanings - the signified and the signifier, an expression of natural and abstract reality.
The ease with which we recognise the different component elements will make it legible or will link recognisable symbols together.
The latter will give us our reference points.
The art of urban composition takes into account these fundamental ideas, the three components being: IDENTITY, STRUCTURE AND MEANING.
It is through this process that cities adapt to the demands of the future.
The appeal of cities lies in the emotions they arouse, in the constantly renewed discoveries they offer, in the metaphors that become reality,
in encounters, in the sociability of the community. In order to achieve this, multi-disciplinary planning that includes architects and landscape
architects, is needed in order to give lasting meaning to the cultural references of any urban planning project. So the professional field of urban
planning comprises three predominant dimensions: SPACE, PEOPLE AND TIME.
YES, “Culture or the frontiers of Private Space towards IDENTITY! ”
